This is What Happens to Your Brain and Body When you Nap:

In certain places around the world it is common for a whole town to shut down in the middle of the day for a ‘siesta’ while it’s inhabitants take a mid-day nap, however in the U.S, due a more rigid working day, taking a nap in the middle of the day is seen at best as a luxury, at worst a lazy habit. 

But research is beginning to suggest that napping is not only a completely natural phenomenon, is can actually be good for you.

Even after a good nights sleep, the stresses of our daily lives means as the day wears on things such as our alertness and focus can be compromised. In the times of our ancestors this had much more of an implication than in our lives today-it could have meant the difference between life and death. 

Thankfully we don’t have to hunt for our own food anymore, but taking a short nap of just 15-20 minutes can increase our senses enough to get you through whatever the latter-half of the day might bring.

Companies such as Google and Apple to name a few are among those who allow their employees to have nap time. Studies have confirmed that short naps improve awareness and productivity.

study from the University of Colorado Boulder concluded that children who missed their afternoon nap showed less joy and interest, more anxiety, and poorer problem solving skills than other children who had been allowed to nap. These benefits are transferable to adults.

Researchers with Berkeley found that taking a hour nap dramatically increased learning ability and memory. Naps allow the short term memory to be cleared out and space in our brain becomes freed up with more space.

How Long Should You Nap?

10-20 minutes- 

or the ‘power nap’ is said by experts as being sufficient to improve alertness and boost energy. The sleep isn’t as deep as longer naps, which allows you to switch back easily to your working day.

30 minutes-  

sleeping for 30 minutes has shown to have a negative impact, as it can lead to grogginess known as ‘sleep inertia’ which can last for up to 30 minutes before the benefits of the nap kick in.

60 minutes- 

this length of nap has been shown to be the best in order to improve memory. You will enter slow wave sleep during this duration of sleep which can allow you to better remember facts and names. You may experience some drowsiness on waking however, die to the length pf the sleep.

90 minutes- 

this amount of sleep means you will experience all the different cycles of sleep, including the deeper stages, and REM sleep. This leads to increased procedural memory function, such a leaning the piano or riding a bike. Little to no drowsiness is reported on this length of nap, which is also beneficial.

Whilst naps have been proven to provide these beneficial effects, a good nights sleep is also essential so make sure you get your 8 hours every night.
