The 10 Most Functional Foods In The World Which Destroy Cancer Cells

There are many enzymes, proteins and coding, in particular, that are able to be activated to kill off cancer cells. 

Believe it or not, there is no such thing as a cancer cell that can’t be warded off by the immune system. Proteins can be inefficient when cells go through uncontrolled growth through damage or mutations of DNA, or when toxins from chemical pollution and food mess with the immune systems natural function. There are 10 functional foods that help to stop tumor development, and helps the immune system fight off cancer.

Scientists have released shocking findings that show healthy cells damaged from chemotherapy, had given off a protein that promoted cancer growth. It has been found that chemotherapy helps cancer cells stay connected to nearby tumor cells, allowing them to invade, grow, and fight off therapy. 

The journal “Science Translational Medicine,” published a study in which scientists discovered that a molecule called TIC10, activates a cancer-fighting protein. This protein, named TRAIL (tumor-necrosis-factor-related-apoptosis-inducing ligand) slows down tumor growth and can navigate the blood-brain barrier, which keeps the circulatory system and brain separated.

Our bodies are equipped with the ability to find and eliminate foreign invaders and poisonous toxins, like chemotherapy, which isn’t helpful to the immune system. There are a lot of cancer drugs/treatments that are kept from passing the blood-brain barrier. TRAIL is the only protein able to pass into the blood-brain barrier, as it can be helpful for the immune system.

What’s so great about TIC10 is that it doesn’t just turn on the TRAIL gene within cancer cells, but also can turn it on in healthy cells. This is referred to as the ‘bystander effect’ where cells close to cancer cells are eliminated. Healthy cells that are nearby receive an increase in cancer-fighting TRAIL receptors on the cell exterior.

1. Turmeric

Curcumin is a great antioxidant that comes with many health benefits, and is found within turmeric. A team of researchers in Munich conducted a study that proved turmeric can prevent the formation of metastases.

Curcumin has anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effects that prevent tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-Alpha), proving that its effect on endothelial function is leveled by the refrainment of oxidative stress and/or inflammation from the regulation of TNF-alpha. 

Ethnobotanist James A. Duke, PhD, published an extensive review summary of 700 studies on turmeric. He proved that turmeric is highly effective than many pharmaceutical drugs when it comes to treating cancer. The best part is that it has no side effects. 

2. Sea Vegetables

These sea veggies are so effective in fighting off cancer cells. Hijiki, arame, nori, kelp and kombu are beneficial to the immune system. They are abundant in many minerals such as iron, magnesium, calcium, and iodine. So, scientists would naturally be drawn to these vegetables as they have anti-cancer effects, and helps fight many other types of cancer. These vegetables were researched and examined, and were found to have a lot of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds. 

When it comes to estrogen-based cancers, most notably breast cancer, have a negative reaction with consumption of sea vegetables. The compounds in the vegetables are able to change up a woman menstrual cycle. In this case, over tens of years the total estrogen secretion during the follicular phase is dramatically lowered. 

3. Grapes and Resveratrol

Resveratrol is an antioxidant compound that is found in red grapes. Resveratrol isn’t just an antioxidant and antimutagen, but also decreases oxidant-caused cell death. Resveratrol inhibits the production of nitric oxide and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-A) by lipopolysaccharide-stimulated Kuppfer cells. Kuppfer cells are macrophages that are in the liver. Their chronic overproduction of nitric oxide and TNF-A due to chronic infection, can cause severe liver damage.

Resveratrol’s best property is its ability to obstruct cyclooxygenase-2 (CoX-2). CoX-2 is linked to cancers and abnormal growths in the intestinal tract. Natural CoX-2 inhibitors such as resveratrol have been scientifically proven to eliminate cancerous and pre-cancerous growths. The ingredient is in red grapes, so if you eat them daily (or organic grape juice) will protect your body from cancer.

4. Chlorella and Spirulina

South Korean scientists have recently found that carotenoids from chlorella can be effectively used to prevent cancer in humans. They discovered the primary carotenoid from C. ellipsoidea is violaxanthin, while the major carotenoid from C. vulgaris is lutein. They thoroughly examined the activity of semi-purified extracts of the carotenoids against human cancer and found they obstructed cancer cell growth in a dose-dependent manner.

5. Green Tea

The health benefits of green tea are from flavonoids called catechins. Researchers are mostly intrigued by epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate (EGCG), the primary catechin in green tea. South Korean researchers discovered that EGCG blocks TNF by interfering with the ability of certain pro-inflammatory chemicals to bind to cells of muscle tissue in the vascular system.

The Chonbuk National University Medical School, conducted a study in 2009, where it was noted that the specific mechanism of action of EGCG in terms of blocking TNF is the obstruction of fractalkine, an inflammatory agent thats involved in the effects of arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). 

6. Cruciferous Vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables have many vitamins, minerals, nutrients, and chemicals known as glucosinolates. These chemicals are found to break down into biologically active compounds that have anticancer effects.

Arugula, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, turnips and collard greens are amongst the different types of cruciferous vegetables that are filled with nutrients, including several carotenoids (beta-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin); vitamins C, E, and K; folate; and minerals.

Biologically active compounds such as indoles, nitriles, thiocyanates, and isothiocyanates in these vegetables help to prevent cancer by ensuring the protection of cells from DNA damage, helping to inhibit carcinogens, provoke cell death of carcinogens and stopping tumor blood vessel formation (angiogenesis) and tumor cell migration (needed for metastasis). For total glucosinolate content, turnip greens outdo cabbage, kale, cauliflower, and broccoli when it comes to commonly eaten cruciferous vegetables.

7. Tomatoes

Consuming tomatoes is linked to a lower risk of many types of cancer and coronary heart disease. Among the many tomato components with healthy properties, carotenoids and lycopene are being investigated for its benefits.

Regular intake of tomato juice provides small amounts of carotenoids which were found on the production of inflammatory mediators, such as TNF-alpha. It was found that TNF-alpha production by whole blood was 30% lower after consuming raw tomato juice for a month.

8. Medicinal Mushrooms

Mushrooms have been used for thousands of years for nutritional and medicinal purposes. Anti-viral and anti-cancer effects have been found in more than 50 species through animal and in vitro studies.

Six components of these mushrooms have been investigated for their activity in human cancers: the lentinan component from shiitake, schizophyllan, active hexose correlated compound (AHCC), maitake D-fraction and two components of Coriolus versicolor. Coriolus versicolor is a common polypore mushroom, which can be found anywhere in the world. Versicolor means ‘of several colors’ and it is true that this mushroom is found with different colors. It is also recognized as a medicinal mushroom in Chinese medicine under the name yun zhi.

Polysaccharide-K (PSK), is a protein-bound polysaccharide isolated from Trametes versicolor, which is an immune system boosting agent for treatment of cancer. It is widely utilized in a few European countries including China and Japan. In Japan, PSK is utilized as an adjuvant for cancer therapy and completely covered by government health insurance. PSK displays anticancer activity from preliminary laboratory assessments in vitro, in vivo and in human clinical trials.

Preliminary research has proven that PSK could slow down mutagen-induced, radiation-induced, and spontaneously-induced development of cancer cells.

9. Garlic

The journal Cancer Prevention Research, published a study that notes that Chinese medicine has utilized garlic since 2000 BCE. Authors suggest compounds such as diallyl sulfide–that are released when a garlic bulb breaks into cloves–may be part of the herb’s preventative powers. Several tudies on garlic have appeared dealing with diallyl sulfide and cancer.

One from the Republic of Korea showed that diallyl disulfide (DADS) as the most prevalent oil-soluble sulfur compound in garlic, obstructing cell proliferation in many cell lines. Scientists there examined DADS ability to kill cells in a process involving free radical production. They found that the famous tumor suppressor gene, p53, arrested the cell cycle when DADS treatment was present. Cancer cells died following 24 hour DADS treatment that activated the p53 gene. It was found that DADS caused cell death was prevented by treatment with a compound known to prevent p53 dependent cell death by reducing free radical levels in the mitochrondria, the cellular furnaces.

Their results showed that mitochrondrial free radicals may serve as second messengers in DADS-induced cell death, which requires activation of p53. That study was found in the Journal of Biochemical and Molecular Toxicology.

Allicin gives garlic its aroma and flavor, and is a powerful antioxidant. Allicin compounds decompose in order to generate a potent antioxidant.
