North Dakota is the first state to legalize armed police drones

There has been a lit of talk recently about drones and their benefits to society. It has been speculated that delivery companies such as Amazon will soon be using drones to deliver goods to your door within 30 minutes, but a recent bill passed in the U.S has hinted at the use of drones for military purposes.

North Dakota in 2015 passed a bill that allows drones to carry “less than lethal” weapons, that is tear gas, rubber bullets, beanbags, pepper spray and Tasers. The bill was originally intended to not include any kind of weapons to be attached to the drone.

Rep. Rick Becker of Republican party was the original sponsor of the bill, which was intended to use drones to search properties with a warrant. He said at a hearing in March

In my opinion there should be a nice, red line: Drones should not be weaponized. Period

However Becker was met with obstruction, and was told by his peers that the bill would only be allowed if the outline was changed so that they could carry ‘non lethal’ weapons.

He said:

I submitted with prohibition of any weapons, the law enforcement lobby offered an amendment and said that if the amendments were added, they would not oppose. The committee accepted amendments and I didn’t fight them because I wanted the bill to pass at least to require warrants” and “The law says that law enforcement can’t use drones weaponized with lethal weapons

He added that he wishes to get a bill passed more in keeping with the original idea:

In 2017 when I get back, I will introduce a bill to also include non-lethal

If the lawmakers are trying to down-play the danger of ‘non-lethal’ weapons, it should probably be noted that in 2015, at least 39 people in the U.S. were killed by police Tasers, which as classed as ‘non-lethal’
