Florida school dumps common core then skyrockets to number one in English Language Arts, with 90 percent scoring proficient

For Common Core critics, there's a new piece of ammo in their arsenal - the successes of a Florida school that dumped the Common Core and saw their students' English scores skyrocket as a result.

A charter school, Mason Classical Academy of Naples, Florida, decided to reject the common core, focusing instead on a classical education, which they, as they note on their website, believe brings "superior educational results" - and their results do indeed speak for themselves.

Instead of using the common core methodology, Mason Classical Academy chose to stick with the tried and true phonetical approach to learning language - and the results speak for themselves.

In fact, ninety percent of the third-graders at Mason Classical Academy scored a proficient in English Language Arts, compared to the national average of fifty-eight percent. This placed the MCA third-graders in the top two percent of Florida students, and the fifth-graders scored in the top one percent.

Many critics of the Common Core say that because the Common Core focuses on test results, rather than the process of learning, teachers end up being less successful at teaching and students spend more time stressed, rather than thinking creatively.

Similarly, the Common Core, many say, adds extra steps - making teaching new skills and ideas more complicated than it needs to be.

Of course, as with anything in education, there will always be people on both sides of the debate cherry-picking stories that fit their argument and belief.
