Popular "Diet" Ingredient Now Linked to Leukemia and Lymphoma in New Landmark Study on Humans

The longest study ever to be run on aspartame as a carcinogen in humans has concluded that....

Just one can of diet soda is enough to send the risk for Leukemia skyrocketing in women and men, and for non-Hodgkin lymphoma and multiple myeloma in men.

This long-term study is the most advanced and thorough ever conducted on the topic. This certifies it to be more legitimate than other studies done in the past. It will also lead to the same conclusions in future studies on other cancers.

The most thorough study yet on aspartame – Over two million person-years

In the study, researchers examined data from the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study for 22 years. In the analysis, 47,810 men and 77,218 women were tested.

A total of 2,278,396 personal years were recorded. This study is inferior to previous studies conducted in the past due to its vague assessment on the intake of aspartame. Participants were administered a daily dietary questionnaire every 2 years, while their diets were examined every 4 years.

Accuracy is highly compromised in past studies as the examined participants intake of aspartame was assessed once, which devalues their findings.

One diet soda a day increases leukemia, multiple myeloma and non-Hodgkin lymphomas

The results from the current study proves that one 12-fluid ounce can (355 ml) of diet soda each day contributes to:

  • 31 percent higher non-Hodgkin lymphoma risk (in men only)
  • 42 percent higher leukemia risk in men and women (pooled analysis)
  • 102 percent higher multiple myeloma risk (in men only)

The results above are from milt-variable risk models, compared to those who consumed no diet soda. It remains unclear why men consumer excessive amounts of diet soda had a higher chance of developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma and multiple myeloma. Diet sodas sold in the US are jam packed with aspartame. In the US, Americans consume around 5,250 tons of aspartame, and in that all, 86 percent (4,500 tons) is inside these diet sodas.

Confirmation of previous high quality research on animals

The new study highlights how imperative the quality is of the research being done. Past studies have found no link associating aspartame with cancer, and were done in a short amount of time. They also weren’t accurate in their assessment of long-term intake of aspartame in participants. The new study has resolved these two discrepancies. Fact is, the new study proves there’s a link to cancer with aspartame.

Not new here, and shouldn’t surprise any of us. In 2006, a research study was conducted on animals (900 rats for their entire lives) that shown a higher risk for leukemia and lymphomas in female and male rats.

These rats were administered aspartame in the fetus, and this was where the risks for leukemia and lymphoma were confirmed. Female rats were found to have a higher rate for breast (mammary) cancer. With that, will future studies reveal associated links with aspartame to cancer (breast, prostate, brain).

This is a serious reason to keep you from wanting to consume diet soda, and when it comes to aspartame, avoid it. If you think there is a healthy soda out there, there isn’t. The study found men drank 1+ sugar-sweetened soda everyday saw a 66% rise in the risk for non-Hodgkin lymphoma (way worse than for diet soda).
