Consumers now demanding their meat be raised "humanely," without growth hormones or GMOs, according to new study

A new study from the University of Illinois confirms what many of us already know: Americans want to know what's in their food.

The study determined that more than 90 percent of those surveyed want their food labeled clearly - and any and all GMOs to be labeled as such.

It also showed that most Americans are especially concerned about their proteins - meats, eggs, and dairy - and how those products are labeled.

Seven key issues were examined by the study.

Below, ranked in order of importance to consumers, are those issues:

  1. Had the animal been given growth hormones?
  2. Had GMOs been used in the production of that food?
  3. Had the food been raised humanely? (This was especially critical for milk and eggs, which come from animals which continue producing food products.)
  4. Had the animal been given antibiotics with any regularity?
  5. Had the animals been raised free-range?
  6. Was the animal raised grass-fed, or otherwise vegetarian?
  7. Was the product organic?

In their findings, it was clear to the researchers that many consumers are confused about what means what. For instance, both "organic" and "raised humanly" preclude the use of growth hormones.

Labeling, therefore, has a direct impact on the salability of a product, and consumers are demanding clear, understandable labeling that clarifies issues that are important to them in a very direct way.

The University of Illinois study really drives home the point that consumers want clarity. They want to know what they’re eating; they want to know what the animal they’re eating was fed; they want to know what hormones and medications it was given.

It’s not complicated – just inconvenient for those who wish to keep those facts hidden.
