Women Need More Sleep Because They Have More Complex Brains


Research has proven that women’s brains benefit from a good night’s rest, as it boosts their brain power. With men, it was a different story. 



They are much better off with naps in order to boost their brain power. At the Max Planck Institute in Munich, researchers examined the sleeping patterns of 160 adults to interpret how sleep can affect intellectual ability. 

Researchers watched over the sleep patterns and administered intelligence tests to take a look at what their problem-solving and reasoning skills are, Mail Online reports. Brain activity such as “sleep spindles,” which are brain activity that correlates with other forms of sleep, cross-referenced by gender. 




When women were in a dreamless sleep, it was found that sleep spindles (which correlates to higher IQ score) had increased. It wasn’t found to be the same for men, but the analysis of male brain activity found that they received similar stimulation during small naps.

Professor Martin Dresler says: 

Our results demonstrate that the association between sleep spindles and intelligence is more complex than we have assumed until now.“There are many factors involved in intellectual abilities, and sleep is just one of them. This large study of men and women gives us a more accurate framework for the next phase of research which will involve differences in individuals sleep patterns.

At Loughborough University Sleep Research Centre, researchers had found that women require more sleep as they have a much more complex brain than men. Having done his research on this issue, Professor Jim Horne said,“Women tend to multi-task — they do lots at once and are flexible — and so they use more of their actual brain than men do. Because of that, their sleep need is greater."
