We've written about the dangers of many foods before, but not as often about this one - a food as American as they come. But that doesn't make it any less dangerous...
That food? Hot dogs.
According to new research, children who consume over a dozen hot dogs a month are nine times more likely to develop leukemia. A dozen hot dogs isn't actually that many - figure most kids will have two or three if given the chance, and that's suddenly more like once a week.
In addition, fathers who often ate hot dogs before conceiving are more likely to pass cancer to their children and pregnant women who ate a hot dog are more likely to have children who will develop a brain tumor.
In particular, hot dogs have crazy high nitrate levels. As you may well know, nitrates are nasty business, known carcinogens, and they're pretty much what make hot dogs look like meat.
And unlike foods that naturally contain nitrates, hot dogs don't contain any of the natural antibodies to those nitrates.
