Dietary Changes Now Proven to Effectively Treat Major Depression

Up to 10% of Americans now take some sort of antidepressant. 

Let that sink in for a moment - and then consider the number of people suffering from depression who don't take medication.

It could well be that up to a quarter of Americans have, at one time or another, suffered from depression. But what if they didn't have to?

A recent study, courtesy Australia's Deakin University, suggests that dietary changes can effectively treat and combat depression and other hormonal emotional imbalances.

Notes Felice Jacka, Director of Deakin's Food and Mood Center: 

“We’ve known for some time that there is a clear association between the quality of people’s diets and their risk for depression. This is the case across countries, cultures and age groups, with healthy diets associated with reduced risk, and unhealthy diets associated with increased risk for depression. However, this is the first randomised controlled trial to directly test whether improving diet quality can actually treat clinical depression.”

As patients in the dietary group improved their diet, their rates of depression lowered dramatically compared to the control group. Similar research has tied depression to inflammation in the diet - which can also be combated through better diet choices.

For the many Americans who suffer from depression, that's a bright slice of hope!
