Beetroot and beet greens are effective builders and cleansers of the blood.

Beets are in the same family as spinach and chard. The leaves of beets are bitter tasting, but abundant in chlorophyll. Being bitter, greens have the highest nutritional value than roots. 

They contain Betacyanin, a phytochemical in beets responsible for its color that lowers homocysteine levels. 


Beets contain lots of vitamin A, B1, B2, B6 and C. Its greens contain plentiful amounts of iron compared to spinach. They have tons of magnesium, calcium, iron, phosphorus, copper and sodium.

It is also a good source of choline, iodine, manganese, organic sodium, potassium, fiber, folate and carbohydrates in the form of natural sugars. Its iron content, is of the highest and finest quality, that makes excellent food for blood building.It essentially is great for treatment of blood-related illnesses.


Its long known that beets have health benefits for the whole body. Here are some benefits: 

Acidosis: Its alkalinity is essential and effective in combating acidosis.

Anemia: The high content of iron in beets builds and kickstarts the red blood cells to supply fresh oxygen to the body. The copper content in beets help make iron more available to the body. A great helper for blood-building!

Atherosclerosis: The juice is actually a powerful solvent for inorganic calcium deposits that cause the arteries to harden.

Blood pressure: Beets work to stabilize blood pressure, lower high blood pressure or increasing blood flow.

Cancer: Beetroot contains anti-cancer properties. Studies show that beets juice stops the formation of cancer-causing compounds and is protective against colon or stomach cancer.

Constipation: The cellulose content helps to support and stimulate bowel movements. Drinking beets juice regularly will help relieve chronic constipation.

Dandruff: Mix a little vinegar to a small cup of beets juice. Massage it into the scalp with your fingertips and leave on for about an hour, then rinse. Do this daily until dandruff is gone. Warning: you will smell awful during this hour!

Detoxification: The choline from this wonderful juice detoxifies not only the liver, but also the entire system of excessive alcohol abuse, provided consumption of alcohol is ceased.

Gastric ulcer: Mix honey with your beets juice and drink two or three times a week on an empty stomach (more frequently if your body is familiar with beets juice). It helps speed up the healing process.

When looking for beetroots, aim for those that are firm and not wrinkly like. When the greens are attached, beets will stay fresh for 3-4 days in the fridge as the moisture has to be supplied to the leaves. Without its leafy greens, beetroot will be able to stay fresh for a few weeks. 

Round-bottomed beetroot is found to be sweeter than flat-bottomed ones. When you are cooking beets, try not to overheat them as the nutrients will seep out and into the water instead. Remove beet skin before placing it into a saucepan. 

If you choose to make juice, add in a quarter slice of lemon to the beetroot to raise the nutrient intake rate and enhance the taste. 


People who have a history of oxalate-filled kidney stones should limit/avoid eating beets. The juice is strong so its wise to consume a little considering if your body isn't used to it. Starting it out for the first time, use a medium sized beetroot once a week, gradually going towards a full beetroot a week. 

Beetroot juice is potent and can make you feel dizzy with its strong cleansing abilities. It can be discomforting, but no fear as its normal. When drinking the juice, make sure you have water alongside it to help in the elimination of toxins and waste.
