Victory! France Officially Bans All Pesticides In Public Green Spaces
While pesticide companies and lawmakers in the United States continue to double down on synthetic and toxic substances for farmers and gardeners, many European countries including France have been going in a decidedly different direction.
The country has long had a strong opposition to genetically modified organisms, Monsanto, and other agrochemical companies and creations, and now they’ve decided to take it a step further.
According to several new reports, pesticides have been officially banned in all public green spaces in the country. And the ban has already taken effect, impacting not only city workers but also private gardener as well.
According to a report from ABC News citing the Associated Press, pesticides are now banned (effective as of January 1st) from all public green spaces, including parks, gardens and forests. Cemeteries will still be allowed to spray the chemicals, but non-professional gardeners will not be allowed to buy pesticides moving forward as well.
According to a video report from the website NewsBeat Social, France uses more than 80,000 tons of the chemicals per year, which makes them known as Europe’s top user of synthetic pesticides. But all of that has gone out the window now as the new ban has taken effect.
“French children will soon be able to frolic in the grass without risk of intoxication,” the AP reported.
France has now positioned itself as a leading country in the green movement as this past July it announced a ban on plastic cups and utensils that will take effect in 2020.
