Seattle-Caught Salmon Found To Contain Cocaine, Antidepressants, And Pain Relievers

Puget Sound salmon may be hardly as healthy as we thought: A recent study found 81 different drugs and personal care-products in fresh caught salmon.

Though salmon are considered a superfood, courtesy their high mix of omega-3s, proteins, and essential fatty acids, a recent study showed they may also carry much, much more. The Seattle Times reports drugs found in the fish include Prozac, Advil, Benadryl, Lipitor, and even cocaine.

Drug levels may be as high as they are either because use of those drugs is higher in the surrounding area or because waste water treatment plants are unable to fully remove the chemicals during treatment. It's also possible that leaky septic systems are contributing, as high fecal coliform counts were also found.

Notes Jim Meador, an environmental toxicologist at NOAA’s Northwest Fisheries Science Center in Seattle: “The concentrations in effluent were higher than we expected. We analyzed samples for 150 compounds and we had 61 percent of them detected in effluent. So we know these are going into the estuaries.”

Samples found drugs not only in the fish, but also in the surrounding water, and it's possible the study underreports, as deeper water and water closer to outfall pipes were not tested.

Some of the drugs and contaminates found include Flonase, Aleve, Tylenol, Paxil, Valium, Zoloft, Tagamet, OxyContin, Darvon, Nicotine, caffeine, Fungicides, antiseptics, anticoagulants, as well as plenty of antibiotics.

It's not likely the contamination will let up, either, as much as 97,000 pounds of drugs and chemicals may be entering Puget Sound each year. Already Meador's other work has shown that juvenile chinook salmon in the area die at twice the rate of fish elsewhere, and it may only get worse.
