Two NEW Studies Suggest Psilocybin Can Provide Immediate Relief for Depression, Anxiety and Cancer Patients

Two recent studies have confirmed that the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, psilocybin is helpful in treating sufferers of anxiety and depression.

Two studies, published Thursday in the Journal of Psychotherapy have shown a “single psychedelic experience could produce profound and enduring mental health benefits.”

The studies were conducted by research teams at New York University and Johns Hopkins University, and mainly treated cancer patients who were suffering from mental health problems after undergoing cancer treatments such as chemotherapy.

The doctors said that when given controlled amounts of  psilocybin, the patients “produced immediate, substantial, and sustained improvements in anxiety and depression and led to decreases in cancer-related demoralization and hopelessness, improved spiritual well being, and increased quality of life.”

It was back in the 1950's when scientists began invesitgating the effects of hallucingenic drugs like LSD in a medical environment.
Imperial College London Proffessor David Nutt, a neuropsychopharmacologist has said that the trials were “the most rigorous controlled trials” to date using psilocybin, although he did not participate in the trials himself.

Nutt wrote. He is in favour of psychedelic-assisted therapy.

There was no evidence of psilocybin being harmful enough to be controlled when it was banned, and since then, it has continued to be used safely by millions of young people worldwide with a very low incidence of problems.

The NYU study was conducted on 29 patients treated over a period of 6 months, and the Johns Hopkins study was on 51 patients again over 6 months, no serious side effects were reported.

Dr. Craig Blinderman, director of the adult palliative care service at the Columbia University Medical Center and New York-Presbyterian Hospital, told the Associated Press the studies show “very impressive results,” but more research is still needed.

The researchers at both studies have urged people not to experiment with these drugs at home, and that the trials were carefully controlled with the amount of hallucinogens that were administered.
