Solar-Powered Pipe Desalinates 1.5 Billion Gallons of Drinking Water a Year for California

A new superstructure in California is providing clean drinking water for millions of residents, while using the by-product, salt water, to supply thermal baths in the city.

The process is called 'desalination', and this particular way in which it is created using solar power is an important example for future generations to overcome problems with clean drinking water as well as being environmentally friendly.

The project is called 'The Pipe' and it produces an endless source of drinking water and electricity, and this type of system is what is needed for the future to guide us through climate change. This machine generates up to 10,000 MWh a year and turns 4.5 billion liters (or 1.5 billion gallons) of salt water intosafe drinking water at the same time.

It was debuted at the Land Art Generator Initiative in Santa Monica, California.Co-founders of the Land Art Generator Initiative Rob Ferry and Elizabeth Monoian write “LAGI 2016 comes to Southern California at an important time,” “The sustainable infrastructure that is required to meet California’s development goals and growing population will have a profound influence on the landscape. The Paris Climate Accord from COP 21 has united the world around a goal of 1.5–2° C, which will require a massive investment in clean energy infrastructure.”

Solar panel located on top of The Pipe provide electricity to a pump which filters the salt water with a electromagnetic filtration process below , which quietly provides the salt bath with its healing water and the city with clean drinking water. The water is released into the ocean via a smart relief system, which eradicates the problems that usually happen when returning salt water to the sea. The design team wrote in their brief. “The Pipe represents a change in the future of water".
