IKEA Surprises Shoppers By Placing Recreated Syrian Home In Store

IKEA have created an installation to ensure the public don't forget about the Syrian refugee crisis which is still very much going on.

In a bold move, in one of their Norwegian stores they have recreated a house modeled on a real refugee home to ten people, showing the awful conditions many of the refugees have to live in.

According to Amnesty International, over half of the population of Syria has been displaced since the war erupted in 2011, with a further 12.8 million people are still in need of urgent humanitarian assistance. It is estimated that over 220,000 people have been killed in the fighting.

To ensure the public has not forgotten about the people still in need of urgent care, the IKEA store in Slependen, Norway, partnered up with the Norwegian Red Cross and the advertising agency POL to create the replica of a real refugee home. DesignBoom reported that it is one of IKEAS 'pop-up homes' that has been transformed so that customers can experience what the living conditions are really like.

The piece is called “25 m2 of Syria” as it is just 25 meters squared, and is modeled on a home to ten refugees. It is modeled on real life home just outside of Damascus, which is home to a lady named Rana and her family. Rana told the Red Cross team:

“When we had to flee to this area to find safety, we did not have enough money to rent a better place. We have no money to buy mattresses and blankets, or clothes for the children.”

As Bored Panda noted, the house includes the IKEA posters, but instead of product details, they include details of the stories of refugees, and how they deal in a daily basis with shortages of food, water, and clothing. There is a text number at the bottom, in the hope that people will continue donating to this cause, which is as bad as ever.

IKEA have been praised for showing they have a heart, with many other corporations and retailer chosing to ignore the crisis as it might not help give the slick, perfect image many retailers like to uphold, ignoring the real problems in the world.
