Yet Another EU Nation Moves to Ban Cultivation of GM Crops

Germany’s government have just approved a preliminary law which will ban the cultivation of genetically modified crops throughout the country.

An act passed by the European Parliament in April 2015 gave Member States (MS) ultimate rule over whether they wanted to put a total ban on GMO crops, and they have decided they want to join the ever increasing list of countries that are saying 'NO GMO'

The other countries who have either already implemented, or plan to do the same are:
  • Scotland
  • Wales
  • Northern Ireland
  • Austria
  • Bulgaria
  • Croatia
  • Cyprus
  • Part of Belgium
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Italy
  • Latvia
  • Lithuania
  • The Netherlands
  • Poland

This is a shock decision for Germany as they have a strong biotech industry that has been fighting for control over the GMO business in the country.

The move will come as a blow for DuPont Pioneer and Dow Chemical, who have been waiting for 15 years for an EU permit to cutlivate GMO crops.

GMO fan Monsanto have also expressed their disappointment with the new law, saying that the decision “contradict science.”

The Hungarians were the first EU country to take a firm stance on GM crops when six years ago they put a stop to 1,000 acres of GM maize that was being grown illegally.

The planned merger between Germany-based Bayer, and U.S.-based Monsanto will no doubt be affected, and with ChemChina-Syngenta and DuPont-Dow Chemical creating their own multi-billion-dollar mergers, farmers and consumers against GMO crops will still have some control if the origin of their food.

Bill and Melinda Gates try to convince an EU country to embrace GMOs:

This law is a step in the right direction for those who believe in only organic produce, but as the market becomes more and more saturated with companies who believe chemicals and pesticides are the best way to grow food, we still have the ultimate power, in what we chose to, or not to, buy.
