Bernie Sanders Just Wrote an Open Letter Calling on President Obama to Stop the Dakota Pipeline

Bernie Sanders has written an open letter in which he demands President Barack Obama fulfills his commitment to reduce climate change in the stopping of the Dakota pipeline.

The senator, who gained over 11 million votes in the Presidential primary issued a statement on his official U.S. Senate website, in which he asked the President to stage a cultural and environmental review before allowing the work to carry on.

Sanders wrote “It is deeply distressing to me that the federal government is putting the profits of the oil industry ahead of the treaty and sovereign rights of Native American communities, Mr. President, you took a bold and principled stand against the Keystone pipeline – I ask you to take a similar stand against the Dakota Access Pipeline.”

He continued “To my mind, the [U.S. Army Corps of Engineers] should have never approved this project on an expedited process in the first place".

Sanders also urged for federal observers to be sent to the Dakota Access Pipeline construction site to fulfill the First Amendment rights for Native Americans who are fighting for the safety of their own land and water.

Sanders stated “I urge you to take all appropriate measures to protect the safety of the Native Americans[sic] protesters and their supporters who have gathered peacefully to oppose the construction of the pipeline,”

He also gave concerns about the preserving of the environment, and the potential for hazards to occur.

“According to one report, burning the oil transported through the pipeline would produce carbon emissions equivalent to 21 million cars or 30 coal plants,” Sanders wrote. “If we have any hope of avoiding the worst consequences of climate change, we should not be building new oil pipelines that lock us into burning fossil fuels for generations to come.”
The letter is particularly poignant after national guardsmen and private security forces clashed with indigenous water protectors on Thursday. Videos revealed police using pepper spray and LRAD sound cannons against Standing Rock protesters.

There were around 140 water protestors arrested in the clash, which they had intended to be a peaceful protest.
