A Little Innocuous Weed is one of the Most Useful Medicines on Planet Earth

Chances are you've walked past this common weed thousands of times without noticing, or perhaps even tried to eradicate it from your garden. Truth is, this little common garden weed is actually one of the worlds most useful medicines, and it grows everywhere!

It's name is plantain, and there are two major types of plantain in British Columbia, Canada: Lance and Broadleaf. It is thought that of all 200-plus varieties of plantain they all yield the same results.

It grows best in poor, rocky soil, like gardens ans driveways and is often spotted growing alongside dandelion. It was introduced to North America in the 1600s, and was know as 'White Man’s Foot' by the Native Americans who noticed that wherever the Europeans tread on the land, this particular weed always grew.

Firstly, plantain has been used for many years by hikers who have been plagued by mosquito bites, a remedy for the relief of mosquito bites has been searched for by people the world over.

Plantain has the amazing quality that it draws toxins from the body because of  its astringent nature. For other anti-sting results, plantain can be crushed or chewed and applied directly to the site of bee stings, bug bites, acne, slivers, glass splinters, or rashes. For best results, you you bandage up the effected area and leave for 4-12 hours.

It can also be used to make a balm for emergency kits, or as a skin or general wash, and is also effective as a treatment for hemorrhoids.

This handy weed also works wonders on the digestive system, meaning it is especially useful for stomachs that have been damaged by antibiotics, anti-inflammatory or pain medications, food allergies, or Ceoliac disease.

The whole of the plant, including the leaves and the seeds are useful for treating digestive problems. The leaves can be steeped to make a  tea, added to soups, or dried out to make chips (similar to kale or beetroot chips) The seeds which contain a type of psyllium can be ground up, soaked for bulk mucilage or absorbable fiber which has been said can aid with weight loss.

Plantain is also an expectorant and is high in silica, which means it can be beneficial for those suffering lung problems, coughs, and colds.
