World’s Oldest Tree Uncovered In Sweden And You’ll Never Believe How Old It Really Is!

The world's oldest living tree is named after a Siberian husky named 'Old Tjikko'. The name was given to the tree by the dog's owner, Professor Leif Kullman.

Professor Kullman discovered the Norwegian Spruce Tree growing in Sweden in 1994. This ancient tree is double the age of any tree previously assumed to be the oldest trees still standing.

So how old is 'Old Tjikko?'

The pretty tree may not look much different than the surrounding foliage, but it is much older at 9,500 years old! The Norwegian spruce continues to grow today 2,985 feet atop a shrubby mountain in Dalarna Province.

When Professor Kullman originally discovered the tree he was unsure how old it really was. Researches realized this was the oldest known living tree on the planet using a process known as carbon-14 dating.

'Old Tjikko' is old but it isn't all that big, which has worked to its advantage because according to Kullman, "Big trees cannot get as old as this."

The tree's size has been affected a lot by the climate it was raised in. A climate with lots of wind and low temperatures.

Kullman thought that trees couldn't be much older in Sweden because prior to this time the entire country was covered in sheets of ice until the end of the last Ice Age 11,000 years ago.

The tree was one of the first signs of greenery at the end of the Ice Age, one that still stands proud today through summer, spring, fall and even brutal winters.

The oldest tree species is generally considered to be Bristlecone pines, which are found in the western portions of the US. The oldest Bristlecone (located in the White Mountains of California) dates back 5,000 years ago, nearly half the age of this Norwegian spruce.
