Student Suspended After Sharing Picture of Discolored Water in School Bathroom

When a student at a school in Michigan saw a problem with the water at her high school, it made her upset. So she took a picture of the discolored water and posted it to Facebook and Twitter.

But the very picture she thought would bring about change actually got her suspended.

“I always hope that someone will see it and want to help us because our school obviously doesn’t have money,” Hazel Juco told WXYZ.

Juco says she was called to the principal’s office shortly after posting the photo:

They told me I was being suspended OSS. It’s inappropriate use of electronics in the restroom. And every girl takes selfies in the bathroom and makes it their profile pictures and no one has gotten in trouble.

Dozens of students protested by tweeting bathroom pictures, and none of them got in trouble.

WXYZ called Wayne-Westland Community Schools Superintendent Dr. Michele Harmala, and she said school administrators made a mistake by not reporting the water issue to maintenance.

Now a pipe leading to the faucet is being replaced.

Harmala also said that the school does have a rule against pictures in bathrooms to prevent people from taking inappropriate pictures. But in this case, since the student was reporting a building issue, the suspension is being expunged from Juco’s record.
